Life is about choices. Your future will be determined by the decisions you make each day. Rather than wondering what will happen next, you get to decide that for yourself by taking inspired action steps each day to get where you want to be.

Here's how your choices today impact your tomorrow, and ultimately the rest of your life.

Setting goals

Simply setting goals will help organize your desires and create the next steps to take to make them a reality.

Utilizing goal-setting methods gives you a grand plan as to “how” you’re going to best achieve them. A great way to set goals is by using the SMART method:

  • S = Specific: Make your goals as specific as possible so you’re able to visualize it before it’s achieved.

  • M = Measurable: Ensure the goal you choose can be measured either through number metrics or on a sliding scale so you’ll be able to track your progress over time.

  • A = Attainable: While it’s great to shoot for the moon, there may be times when you have to step back and really ask yourself whether a goal is actually attainable for you.

  • R = Realistic: Ask yourself if your goal is realistic enough to actually be achievable. You may feel discouraged if you’re not making progress on a goal that just wasn’t practical in the first place.

  • T = Timely: Put a time limit on this goal. Set a date for when you want to achieve it and how long you think it will realistically take.

Taking baby steps

When you think about it, achieving a goal starts and ends with a series of small baby steps. While it might seem like you aren't achieving much each day, you'll eventually look back in awe of how far you've come.

Breaking a goal down into smaller, bite-sized chunks also keeps you from feeling overwhelmed by how far you have to go to achieve it. Focus on just one to two tasks each day that will help build or maintain your business. You’ll learn as you go, and you can find ways to start slow and achieve the business of your dreams while contributing to the success of tomorrow.

Embracing the discomfort

Sometimes, sitting in the "now" is the most difficult part of making choices today that will impact the rest of your life. The journey of creating and maintaining a business or trying to achieve a goal can be messy, simply because life is messy and there’s always going to be something you may have wanted to go differently.

Stressing about what could happen or what already has happened may keep you from moving forward. But embracing the uncertainty and practicing patience will pay off in the long haul. Remember this: you can't rush success.
